I am so excited to share with you this Q&A from someone who I have had as an Insta-Inspiration for a while. Her yoga photos and poses are not only beautiful but her passion for living a healthy lifestyle and her words are so inspiring. I love her stories behind her posts that vary from how she was finally able to progress in a posture, to a quote she finds relatable at the time, to introducing tips/information on yoga philosophy.
Whitney Davis (@whitneydavisyoga) is a yoga instructor in Florida. She teaches a wide variety of yoga from Hot Yoga to Yin Yoga. She hosts quite a few yoga challenges on Instagram. Her yoga challenges are educational and inspirational. Whitney invites you to be creative in the challenges and she gives some much needed background about why certain yoga postures are helpful in strengthening muscle groups.
I asked Whitney a few questions that I am always curious about when I find an inspirational profile to follow on Instagram:
What is something that everyone knows about you? What is something that most people don’t know about you?
I think everyone knows that I love yoga haha! But most people actually do not know that I’m passionate about music and used to compete in singing competitions. I’m always singing somewhere when I’m at home or driving.
What was the hardest part about first starting your yoga journey?
I think the hardest part of starting my yoga journey was making time for my practice…I started practicing during college and I just did not find a way to make time for it. However the little I did, it helped tremendously and I decided to truly commit to a daily practice when I turned 25.
How do you stay inspired in your personal yoga journey? How do you stay inspired teaching yoga?
I stay inspired by reading, practicing with different teachers and studying the philosophy of yoga. I feel the same about teaching. I do not feel like I can really teach to the best of my abilities if I’m not practicing myself or learning.
Who is an Insta-Inspiration of yours and why?
I can’t specifically choose just one person. So many yogis on instagram inspire me. I love when I see yogis being themselves and sharing from the heart.
What is one thing you do everyday to help with your wellness journey?
I try to move a lot everyday and most of my meals are plant-based and nutritious. However, I’m a true Libra, so I’m always seeking balance in my life. Everyday I try to treat myself with a glass of wine or a piece of dark chocolate (or some days the whole damn chocolate bar!) and that is the key to wellness for me.
What is something you are working on or working towards in your yoga/wellness journey?
I’m currently in my 300hr YTT and I will complete that in November! I’m also always working on managing my anxiety and staying grounded.
What is your favorite thing about the Instagram Yoga/Wellness Community?
The friendships. I have made friends all over the world and its been absolutely incredible. Instagram has opened a lot of doors for me and helped me come out of my shell even more.
Do you have a favorite mantra or quote?
My favorite quote that I like to end a lot of my classes with is Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu. It transalates to – “May all beings be happy, healthy and free, and may the thoughts, words and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and freedom for all.”
Is your yoga practice mostly a home yoga practice or do you practice at a studio as well?
I typically practice at home with alo moves and yoga glo, but I love to get to the studio whenever I can. There is something very unique about practicing with others. You feed off of other’s energies and its just such a beautiful way to build a community. I also love to support my fellow teachers and learn from them.
Any advice for yogis (beginner or advanced)?
Commit to never ever stop learning and try to not rush your journey. I’m almost through my 300hr YTT and I still always feel like there is more to know. Also, it is easy to get attached to a goal or a pose or feel discouraged because of gymnastic style yoga on Instagram. I try to remember that yoga is a feeling-not a pose and that helps me enjoy the lessons and the journey.
